Virtuome (since June 2020) We designed and implemented the Virtual Metabolic Human's fully virtual flagship summer research programme for STEM undergraduate students built on the pillars of community involvement, biocomputational research, and personal development
Public & Patient Involvement (PPI) for in silico medicine policy development (since April 2021) We are represented as a founding member of the PPI task force of the Avicenna Alliance policy development working group, with the aim to accelerate societal impact for digital health endeavours.
National PPI Ignite Network (since December 2021) We are represented as a member of the national PPI Ignite Network workgroup for building national PPI capacity across communities, with focus on PPI implementation in lab-based research.
Civic Engagement committee at the University of Galway CMNHS (since October 2021) We are represented in the University of Galway College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences (CMNHS) civic engagement (CE) committee for delivering on the college's strategic plans for CE.
Oud Geleerd Jong Gedaan (OGJG) (since October 2021) We volunteer at OGJG where we contribute to the STEM education of elderly citizens in the Netherlands. Our lectures are focused on the microbiome, to stimulate engaging discussions with the elderly focused around cutting-edge science and technology.
University of Sanctuary Academic Mentorship (since January 2022) We contribute to academic mentorship to University of Sanctuary scholarship recipients, to foster a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants.
Youth Academy (since October 2023) We designed and deliver "Exploring the microbial world that exists inside your body", an introductory course for secondary school students. Coordinated by the University of Galway, this course allows students to engage in research outside of their school curriculum and explore the microbiome role in health and disease.
Science & Engineering Jobs Fair (5 Mar 2024) We organised a stall on Digital Metabolic Twins at the University of Galway Science & Engineering Jobs Fair 2024, with ~20 exhibitors and 300 student attendees. Our team of recent graduates helped interested attendees address their questions relating to career opportunities within the team.
Research for Policy Workshop (8 Feb 2024) We were invited to participate in the Research for Policy Workshop organised by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science, which united about 50 researchers and policy makers, to inform the development of a national framework.
Policy Primer (2 Feb 2024) We attended a workshop on policymaking in Ireland, delivered by Dr Fergal Lynch, Senior Lead in Government and Public Policy Engagement at University of Galway and former Secretary General of the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, and Sean O’Foghlú, Senior Fellow in Public Policy at the Social Sciences Institute, Maynooth University and former Secretary General of the Department of Education.
Internships & Graduate Jobs Fair (23 Jan 2024) We organised a stall on Digital Metabolic Twins at the University of Galway Internships & Graduate Jobs Fair 2024, with over 80 exhibitors and 3,000 student attendees. Our stall design included posters, flyers, merchandise, videos, and an interactive camera installation that turns users into a an ASCI silhouette in real time, as a means to help describe the concept of digital twins.
MDIC Annual Patient Summit (10 Nov 2023) We attended the "Annual Patient Summit: Transforming Patient Science and Engagement in Medical Devices" conference organised by the Medical Device Innovation Consortium with a focus on empowering inclusive patient-centric engagement and overcoming equality, diversity, and inclusion barriers in biomedical technology development.
Avicenna Days 2023 (12 Oct 2023) We were the Master of Ceremony for Day 3 themed "Involving and Serving the Patient" of the Avicenna Days 2023, a 3-Day free and online in silico healthcare event, welcoming a total of 450 registered attendees from 35 countries, including people from academia, industry, regulators, policymakers, and patient associations.
CompBioMed 2023 (14 Sep 2023) We engaged with the wider computational biomedicine community at the Computational Biomedicine conference in Munich, Germany.
PPI Position Paper Publication (4 Jul 2023) We are a lead author for the "Public & Patient Involvement for in silico medicine" publication, which establishes the role and aspirations for PPI development within the Avicenna Alliance for the development of in silico medicine in the international context.
Community Knowledge Initiative Meeting (27 Jun 2023) We met with Engaged Research leaders at the University of Galway to share knowledge and experience based on activities derived from the Engaged Reseach & Innovation for Societal Impact course organised by Campus Engage. The focus was on identifying strategic priorities for Engaged Research in the near-term.
Virtuome alumni wall of faces for International World Microbiome Day (27 Jun 2023) The 2023 Virtuome participants collaborated on producing an alumni "wall of faces" for the occasion of International World Microbiome Day with the aim to raise microbiome awareness with the public.
PPI Postgraduate Module Publication (23 Jun 2023) We have coauthored the "Public and Patient Involvement in laboratory-based research. Recommended curriculum outline for a 5 ECTS postgraduate module" specifically for PPI in laboratory-based health research.
Policymaker private consultation (22 Jun 2023) We met with VOLT Europe co-president Francesca Romana in a consultation about current challenges and opportunities for Digital Health to positively impact the healthcare systems in Europe.
Engaged Research & Innovation Community of Practice Meeting (20 Jun 2023) This gathering united the growing network of over 60 Campus Engage Trainers - Engaged Research and Innovation for Societal Impact. The meeting aim was to consolidate and share best practices and experiences issued from 2 years of leading Engaged Research initiatives in Ireland and internationally.
Irish-Luxembourgish Government Reception (13 Jun 2023) We participated in reception uniting leaders in the public, industry, academic, and arts sectors and had the opportunity to discuss future opportunities in Digital Health with a diverse range of very influential decision makers, including the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel and An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
SCREDX symposium by Stichting Oud-Leden SSR-Leiden (11 Jun 2023) We gave a talk to students and alumni from Leiden University (NL) about the gut-microbiome and its influence on brain health. The talk was part of a yearly organised symposium where a panel of alumni from student association SSR-Leiden talk about their work in governance, law, finance, medicine, IT, or science.
Engaged research for policy impact workshop (6 Jun 2023) We facilitated the "Engaged research for policy impact" workshop to Virtuome 2023 participants as part of the underlying Community Involvement pillar. The workshop focused on identifying relevant policymakers and organisations, stakeholder liaison, and engagement to accelerate the policy implementation of research outcomes. The workshop was based on the Engaged Research & Innovation for Societal Impact by Campus Engage.
Youth forum on bioethics (6 Jun 2023) We nominated our Virtuome alumna Rebecca Lane on behalf of Campus Engage to represent the University of Galway at this pilot youth forum on AI in healthcare at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. The aim of the forum was to provide the Committee with youth perspectives to inform its own work, including its strategic objectives and actions in the field of human rights and biomedicine.
PPI Contributor Education Module Publication (2 Jun 2023) We have coauthored the "Public and patient involvement in laboratory based research: Recommendations for a PPI contributor education module" specifically for PPI in laboratory-based health research.
PPI Survey Publication (31 May 2023) We are a lead author for the "A snapshot of current practices and perceptions of Public & Patient Involvement (PPI) within the Avicenna Alliance" publication, which serves as a guide for targeted activities to implement PPI within the Avicenna Alliance for the furtherment of in silico medicine.
Stakeholder analysis for engaged research workshop (30 May 2023) We facilitated the "Stakeholder analysis for engaged research" workshop to Virtuome 2023 participants as part of the underlying Community Involvement pillar. The workshop focused on conducting systematic stakeholder analysis, engagement, and communication for effective engaged research. The workshop was based on the Engaged Research & Innovation for Societal Impact by Campus Engage.
Pathways to impact workshop (23 May 2023) We facilitated the "Pathways to impact" Engaged Research workshop to Virtuome 2023 participants part of the underlying Community Involvement pillar. The workshop focused on foresightful planning research project outcomes for enabling positive societal impact. NVIDIA seminar on Large Language Models (11 May 2023) We attended the "The Impact of Large Language Models (LLM) on Life Sciences" seminar organised by NVIDIA on how natural language processing (NLP) impacts data analysis in the life sciences and how the latest breakthroughs in NLP are being applied to accelerate drug discovery.
HES-SO Strategic Council Meeting (30 Apr - 2 May 2023) We were invited as an external expert on engaged research by HES-SO in Switzerland to represent the national and institutional initiatives of Ireland, including our Virtuome summer programme , on behalf of the Irish Universities Association and Campus Engage.
Dassault seminar on the Digital Twin experience (18 Apr 2023) We attended the "Virtual twin for all... Is it attainable?" organised by Dassault Systèmes on the current technology landscape and outlook on creating scalable, affordable, easily deployable, digital twins.
INSEAD Tech Talk on Digital Twins (15 Mar 2023) We attended the "Digital Twins: A Powerful Tool to Unlock Business Performance" INSEAD Tech Talk on how digital twins can unlock business performance, including diverse use cases and discussions on the challenges associated with leveraging such technology.
APC Microbiome Ireland Engaged Research Bursary Award (13 Mar 2023) We were one of three APC Microbiome Ireland Engaged Research Bursary awardees for the development of a Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) toolkit in digital health with particular focus on gut health, to promote improved understanding, ownership, and collaboration across society, academia, and policy makers.
Launch of the HSE National Consent for Health & Social Care Research Policy (9 Feb 2023) We attended the Health Service Executive Ireland launch of their national policy on consent for health and social care research with participants from the national healthcare system, with particular focus on Public and Patient Involvement for societal impact. chrome
SmartAge Winter School Workshop (3 Feb 2023) We presented our work on community-engaged research in the field of genome-scale metabolic modelling to 15 talented PhD students at the SmartAge Winter School in Kiel, Germany.
Engaged Research & Innovation for Societal Impact programme facilitation (30 Jan - 10 Mar 2023) We were a facilitator in the 2nd edition of the Campus Engage Engaged Research & Innovation for Societal Impact programme coordinated by Campus Engage. This 6-week programme competitively selected 30 participants from 30 Irish higher education institutions to 'train the trainers' to develop the national capacity to implement best practices for engaged research.
IHMC 2022 Global Gut Health Award (10 Nov 2022) We were honoured with the Global Gut Health Award for our presentation of the Virtual Metabolic Human for human-microbiome metabolic modelling and engaged research at the International Human Microbiome Conference in Kobe, Japan, uniting 800 attendees from all over the world.
Patient engagement symposium (17 Oct 2022) We participated in the "Patient engagement explained: Insights from a patient, a patient association and a pharmaceutical company" online symposium organised by Voisin Consulting Life Sciences, highlighting patient engagement case studies from 3 different perspectives: from a patient, a patient association, and industry.

(10th - 17th Nov 2021) We participated in the "I'm a scientist, get me out of here!" initiative funded by Science Foundation Ireland, where scientists participate in live chats with school children from all across Ireland. We were represented in the Magnesium Zone with focus on biomedicine & engineering and awarded the "Scientist of the Week" prize.
