1 Taskforce

5 Irish universities

10 STEM undergraduates

793 Community contributors

For its summer 2024 edition, Virtuome welcomed 10 competitively selected participants from 5 Irish universities (University of Galway, UCC, UCD, UCC & DCU), spanning cross-functional STEM backgrounds and years 1–4. Now in its 5th consecutive year, running from 20th May – 12th July 2024, our participants advanced the development of a state-of-the-art biochemical network visualisation of human drug metabolism, implemented 4 Digital Health community involvement projects, and navigated steep learning curves in project management, team leadership, and science communication. These experiences were further enriched by symposia with a diverse range of stakeholders, with a strong emphasis on Engaged Research.

Virtuome remains committed to catalysing VMH impact by fostering a sustainable community of future leaders in Digital Health, extending beyond the programme’s conclusion. “Although the programme ends, the community persists” remains the closing motto of the 2024 edition.

Testimonials

"Virtuome was an amazing experience. From the very beginning, I was welcomed into an intellectually stimulating environment. During my internship, I had the opportunity to engage in research projects that significantly enhanced my understanding of community involvement and drug mapping. The mentorship I received was invaluable, providing me with guidance on options after my degree, particularly in the area of PhDs and Masters. The collaborative atmosphere encouraged me to push my boundaries and develop new skills. Overall, my experience as a research intern at Virtual Metabolic Human has been instrumental in shaping my career aspirations. I am grateful for the opportunity and highly recommend this programme to anyone seeking a flexible and enriching research environment.” – Stephen McDonagh, University of Galway “Virtuome 2024 was highly enjoyable helping me get up early everyday and do some stimulating work this Summer with an invested team and dedicated supervisor.” – Faith Ogundimu, Dublin City University
