Virtuome is open to current undergraduate students in the science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and arts (STEAM) subjects at a university in Ireland or internationally. In a digital-first approach, programme participants are immersed in a systematic team environment to accelerate biocomputational research, personal development, and community involvement, to tackle current challenges in digital health, particularly human and microbiome metabolism. Virtuome provides participants with the opportunity to develop personally and professionally, foster a diverse professional network, and develop new skills for their future careers, including through critical thinking by tackling scientific challenges, knowledge of international cutting-edge digital health research, and developing essential interpersonal skills through interdisciplinary teamwork, to develop a portfolio of tangible outcomes. We also provide a platform to engage with further endeavours, such as co-authorship on publications, presentation of project outcomes at international scientific meetings, and establishment of a diverse professional network. Alumni have leveraged their Virtuome participation to secure internationally renowned postgraduate study and industry positions. This year’s scientific focus will be on inherited metabolic diseases.

Participants are competitively selected based on their application. Virtuome is free of charge. Participants are expected to commit fulltime for the 8-week programme during normal working hours and have access to their own desktop/laptop computer and stable internet connection.
